Oral Medicine and Radiology is one of the specialties of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and medical management of diseases affecting the oral and facial region. Many undiagnosed systemic conditions can be diagnosed by an oral physician by routine examination of the orofacial region. This Speciality has a unique responsibility of evaluating the fitness of medically compromised patients seeking dental treatments. This Speciality is therefore the bridge between medicine and dentistry. Advancements in the science of radiology has transformed decades old Dental Radiology to Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology which includes diagnosis of pathologies involving head and neck region with the aid of Intraoral imaging, Extra oral imaging, Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), Ultrasonography (USG), Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET).

The Department of Oral Medicine, Diagnosis and Radiology deals with the diagnosis and referral of patients with dental pathologies, diagnosis and medical management of disorders of the Temporomandibular joint, Orofacial pain, Salivary glands, Ulcers, Bacterial, Fungal and Viral infections of the orofacial region. Precancerous lesions and conditions are diagnosed and treated along with counselling to quit the habits with the help of Tobacco Cessation Centre run by the Department of Public Health Dentistry. Diagnosis of Oral Cancer, evaluating the status of metastasis to distant sites in the body is one of the crucial tasks of this department. The Department of Oral Medicine, Diagnosis and Radiology forms a consortium with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology in the diagnosis and management of cysts, tumors of the jaws. Our department offers digital intraoral and extra oral imaging and advanced imaging services are offered along with the Department of Radio diagnosis at Bhaskar General Hospital.

Undergraduate students are exposed to the Oral Medicine and Radiology clinics during their third year, fourth year and during the internship. Students take case history, do clinical examination and diagnostic workup of dental pathologies which includes intraoral radiographs during their third year. Diagnosis and management of orofacial infections, trauma, premalignancies and interpretation of extra oral radiographs along with case discussions are a part of fourth year. Students during the internship do critical evaluation of interesting cases and also will be guided in treating those conditions. Interns will be guided in learning and incorporating empathy, humility, professional ethics and responsibilities. All the students are supervised by the faculty to ensure effective learning process and radiation protection.

  • Student is trained to arrive at proper diagnosis by following a scientific and systematic procedure of history taking and examination of the orofacial region. Training is also imparted in management wherever possible. Training also shall be imparted on saliva diagnostic procedures. Training also shall be imparted in various radiographic procedures and interpretation of radiographs.
  • In view of the above each student shall maintain a record of work done, which shall be evaluated for marks at the time of university examination
  • The following is the minimum of prescribed work for recording
  1. Recording of detailed case histories of interesting cases: 10
  2. Intra-oral radiographs (Periapical, Bitewing, Occlusal): 25
  3. Saliva diagnostic check as routine procedure.
  • Standardized examination of patients: 25 Cases
  • Exposure to clinical, pathological laboratory procedures and biopsies: 5 Cases
  • Effective training in taking of Radiographs: 2 Full mouth set of radiographs.
    • (Intra-oral) I.O. (Extra oral) E.O.: 1 Radiograph
    • Cephalogram: 1Radiograph.
  • Effective management of cases in wards: 2 Cases.
